I'm suprised no one has commented yet on the supposed reason why Saab picked the 9-3 and 9-5 designations - In Europe, Saab's are often seen as inferior to BMW's, the most high-profile of prestige marques, and they wanted to make a point of what their cars were, and who they were aimed at. Hence 9-3, the Saab equivalent of the BMW 3-series, and 9-5, competitor to the 5-series.
