Take a good look at the TC tensioner to see if there is still > play on the tensioner rod. On my '90 900 convertible, the best (only?) way to check the condition of the timing chain is to remove & inspect the tensioner. It's a simple job involving two bolts, and possible replacement of a seal on reinstallation. If the tensioner is out 11mm or more, do the chain & sprockets. If it ain't, don't. Jesse
