That's an interesting one. The only time I ever had to do something similar was on the voltage regulator from a clunky eastern-block motorbike (CZ 250) in about 1975. One of the pins was supposed to be earthed to the case as it passed through, but had gone dry. The battery didn't receive charge and ran flat on the way home from Reading Rock Festival. I was still a youngster and phoned my Dad. If I remember rightly I resoldered the joint myself - I was a lab technician at the time and did that sort of thing every day - happy memories.
