Stan, The fronts of our cars should be just about identical. Could be relay - however .... I had similar problems - though left and right headlamps independently - never both together, and I don't recall the main beams being affected. For me, the problem was those wretched little wire spring-clips that hold the bulbs in place. They get too hot and lose their spring, and need replacing or bending into a better shape. It's far too tight and fiddly to get at them properly with the headlamp units in the car, so do it on the bench. Removal of headlamps is so simple I would recommend it for just about any maintenance in that area. Remove the radiator grille, disconnect all electrics (to lamps and levelling motor), pop the indicator lenses, then simply remove two bolts and lift unit clear of vehicle. Once on the bench you can really see what you are doing, and get good effect out of the clips by judicious bending, to hold the bulbs down good and tight. Reassembly is simply the reverse process. Check all connectors for corrosion and treat accordingly. Whole job - about 2 hours. 1 hour on a second occasion. Did mine about 9 months ago and have had reliable headlights ever since.
