As Henrik says, it's because the synth cleans the insides, around the seals, very effectively. But there's also some evidence that it causes shrinkage in seals which have been immersed in mineral oil for many years. My recommendation is don't switch from dyno to synth on an older car, unless you've rebuilt the engine, or are prepared to change several seals (particularly crank seals). Grunff
