Subject: Re: replacing CV boot

Hi George: Split boots are a bad idea - they don't last long at all. I just replaced the axles & CV joint assemblies ($90/side) on both sides - it's quite easy as long as you do the following: - Break loose the axle nuts while the car is on the ground. Back the nuts off, but not all the way. - Jack it up, and remove the the wheels. - Use a very large center punch, or pipe, to bang on the center of the axle with a sledge to dislodge the CV joint from the bearing housing (at least 1/2"). The nuts are left on so you don't damage the axle threads. - Remove the 3 bolts holding the ball joint to the A-frame. - Extract the tie rod end from the bearing housing (optional). Either use a compression-type tie rod extractor, or loosen the nut then rap on the side of the housing with a hammer to allow the tie rod to pop loose. Don't use a ball joint / tie rod fork, as this will rip the tie rod boot. - Loosen the 3 bolts holding the strut in place at the strut bearing. Leave one bolt in loosely to support the strut. - Maneuver the ball joint out of the A-frame, and assuming you previously dislodged the CV joint enough, you should be able to move the strut around to where the CV joint will pull out of the bearing housing. - Remove the hose clamp on the inner boot, pull the boot off the tripod housing, and remove the axle. - At this point you can either replace the boot, joint, or the entire axle. After market axles & joints are sometimes inferior, and if you can be without the car for a few days it's often better to send in your own axles to be rebuilt ($75/each). - Get a good optical alignment - NOT computer - once you've got it all back together. Good luck! Once you've done these before, it takes just an hour per side.
