Subject: Re: Saab 9000 CSE

I have a 9000 CSi '92 2.3l / 16V. Since I stopped bringing it for maintenance to the authorized dealers I have had slightly less problems with it. I know two garages, one in Germany and one in Holland, where they specialize in Saabs and are willing to improve on a car rather than just replace the faulty parts with expensive, equally poor original components. I've had this with my brake discs, brake pads, exhaust etc. Watch out for the oil pomp. Around 100 000 km it will fail. If this should happen while you're doing the top speed somewhere on a German autobahn this may cost you a new engine. Being a '97 yours is already well past the warranty time. But that doesn't mean much anyway. Saab's warranty (my experience) is not worth much. It's the arrogance of the manufacturer (GM's attitude doesn't help either) and the legendary image of the SAAB cars that lets them ignore all complaints from the Saab car owners. There are tons of them on the Internet. Component quality inspection in the production is one more weakness of this company. This by the way is the area I work in and my field of professional expertise. Anyway, if you see that the car is in good shape, runs smooth and the price is good go for it. Have you compared it with other brands in terms of the maintenance costs? Where do you live? Some years ago SAAB was the most expensive car in its size and price range to maintain in Europe. Spares, like filters, brake pads etc were more expensive than for top model "S" class Mercedes, BMW and similar. A disgusting rip-off! One more thing to consider. Compare it against any German or Japanese brand. For each one Saab 9000 Audi sells 10 of its A6 (previously Audi 100, 200 etc). Which one of them will have more experience in developing, testing and improving their design? At that time when I chose to buy my first and the last Saab I was impressed by its unique design and the image it had. I was naÔve. I might as well have chosen a classic Italian car designed by Pininfarina or Guggiaro. I have learnt my lesson and I am now looking at these things much more pragmatically. I need a car that will give me safety, comfort and reliability. No more Saab for me. Best regards, Andy "R.
