Subject: Re: $6000 rebate - simply amazing . . .

Trade was a 1999 Grand Cherokee Laredo - these things are a dime a dozen around here - kbb.com and edmunds showed $14000 for the vehicle as a trade and $15,500 private party retail [I checked the local newspapers and private parties are offering around $16,000 as a starting price]. Dealers are only asking $17,000 for the identically equipped vehicles and those are certified pre-owned with warranties. We got $14750 for the trade - plus under our local law we get a credit off the sales price of the car for the sales tax of the amount of the trade-in, so the trade was worth $15,635 to us since we were not paying sales tax on $14,750 of the purchase price of the Saab. Sure - the trade is a cherry black 4WD Laredo with power sunroof, beige leather and infinity sound system that will sell or wholesale for more than the dealer is giving us for it - the essence of a good deal is that there is something for everybody in the transaction. TheyHAVE to make money - or they go out of business and you get fewer choices not more in the future. Even if we got full retail value for the Grand Cherokee of say $16,000 or so, we would really only gotten $365 more than the value of the trade, minus the cost of sale, i.e., newspaper ads and the intangible hassle of dealing with people buying cars, plus the asset continues to decline in value every day it does not sell. If tried to put in the paper for $16,500 to be able to negotiate to $16k - I would get no calls since the vehicle would be priced hundreds more than comparable ads in the paper. as for the GM supplier pricing, heck anybody can negotiate a deal for that price - I have bought EVERY single vehicle in the 15 years I've been buying new, for myself and spouse at or below invoice - sure, I was not buying a Prowler, T-bird or PT Cruiser, but WHY would you compete with others to pay more for a depreciable asset like a car? That makes no sense - heck in 1996 I bought a '97 Wrangler with a 6 cyl engine [those were HARD to find the first model year] - dealer wanted $1000 over invoice, I showed up with cashiers check for my price - he took it. This is not rocket science - they have the item, but WE have the money - as long as you can deal with the hassle, the requirement that you sit around for an hour while they do the stupid dance they always do, deal with the stupid predictable comments and counter offers disguised as them trying to get you to negotiate against yourself, and, most importantly, remember there are always other dealers, other cars and decouple the emotion, business is business . . .they'll come around as long as you stay firm, given them NOTHING in counter and come in the first itme with a FAIR offer - do NOT low ball them - give them a fair price and stick to it. We did - and it worked - every time. Joe Farrell On Thu, 06 Jun 2002 23:19:50 GMT, thedoctornopsame.net wrote: >In <g18sfuou6mn4t8ukugtva26pppp94raufcnopsamcom>, on 06/05/02 > at 11:20 AM, Joseph D.
