Subject: 99 9-3 Vibration UPDATE!

So I took my fourth trip to my Saab dealer with this problem. They've basically given up trying to find the cause of the vibration and pointed the finger at my "aftermarket wheels." Funny, Borbet is a very well known, respected, and top quality German wheel manufacturer, I'm sure there are THOUSANDS of Saabs in Germany riding on these wheels just fine. Dealer's attitude is that I should have stock wheels on the Saab. I guess no Saab in the world can run custom wheels? Gave up on the dealer, thanked him for his time. He did agree to write a letter to TireRack detailing everything they did to get my car to run right, and to formally state that their opinion is that the tire/wheel combination TireRack recommended for my car is wrong for my 9-3. On the way home (now on my stock wheels and snows!) I decide to get a second opinion. Stop by a local family run car shop and relate the entire story to the owner. He puts my Borbets back on the car, puts it on a lift, and does a HAND spin with a strobe light. Spots the problem in under 5 minutes. One of my Borbets is defective and slightly out of round. Then I get the rest of the story. Custom wheels typically don't have rims or "lips" on both sides of the wheel like stock wheels do, and not many mechanics know how to probably balance these tires - the weights need to be positioned on the outer edge of the rim, not on the center as most mechanics are trained to do. To do this right, they also need to have a special Hunter alignment machine. This mechanic pointed out that my Saab dealer tried to balance the wheels the "old way" since all of the weights were incorrectly positioned in the center of the wheel. I get home and get TireRack on the phone. After some battling, they're going to send me a replacement wheel and will send me to a local "authorized TireRack dealer" who can balance my tires correctly. They were very surpised that my Saab dealer couldn't find the problem sooner. Stay tuned! X
