Transistor is used to pick up and hold relay energized for a period of time. I would imagine since you mention electronics inside relay that something similar is involved. Used a junk 123ap (2n2222a) transistor. Cost of xistor, nothing. Cost of new relay, 75 US dollars. Cost of not paying abusive amounts of cash for a cussed relay, priceless. dave the new guy
