The blockage still may be at the oil pick-up. all the dirt in the oil sits at the bottom of the strainer so as the oil is pump up all the dirt forms a small mound under the strainer blocking all flow. When you blow down the strainer the drit is moved away from strainer allowing the air to pass thur.
