how readily does it start on the key? Does it churn for a while before catching? Also, once the car is running OK, and you stop the engine for a few seconds, does it start up again without problem? This may be a problem with the non-return valve in the fuel tank allowing fuel pressure to leak away when the ignition is off, thus causing starting problems due to lack of fuel pressure. I had this problem on my 97 900 SE, and it's a 'known problem', apparently. It cost me about 70 quid to get it fixed. That's mostly for the labour as the fuel tank has to be dropped to get at the pump. If you take it to a garage to do this, make sure the tank's almost empty, or they'll *really* love you for it!
