They are over designed so that they can continue to operate with very little or no maintenance and significant failures. Do you think they do oil changes and tune ups on the battlefield? What do you think happens when a cannon round hits an airplane or helicopter? Some things get damaged. This equipment is designed with redundant system and robust parts so that if one thing gets broken, it still goes when you step on the gas.... otherwise, you're dead. My thought was that it would have been nice if these engines that used belts would have two belts, side by side, instead of one single belt, so that if a belt broke, the engine wouldn't fail. I should be a consultant.
