I did discover that it is necessary to have the second fan (2 in my car) working and running, otherwise the AC won't kick in. Strange, but true. The car never overheats or even gets hot, (knocks on wood feverishly), and I only put in one can of freon from what appeared to be empty status. (No cooling before adding freon.) I'm not sure if I could add more, but seems it seems to be working ok, I'm not messing with it! I've seen the other posts, they all make very good sense. You may wish to check they're suggestions out for your specific make. Good luck!
