Subject: Re: Serpentine Belt Change On 1995 900S 2.3L

I've done this twice on my 1995 900S 2.3L, and there's no reason I can think of to remove the wheel or insert. It's really an easy job, just take your time and you shouldn't have any problems. Before starting this, I would highly recommend evaluating the condition of the idler pulley bearings. They are prone to failure, however, I am told, there is usually lots of warning in respect to noise. I use a piece of pipe as a "stethoscope" to listen to each pulley with the engine idling. After the belt is off, you can also spin them by hand for further evaluation. I replaced two of them at approx. 75K. They probably still had some life left in them, but I wanted to play it safe. Anyhow, onto the belt replacement. First, I remove the entire air intake assembly. Disconnect the electrical connector, undo the two spring clips on the hose, undo the four spring clips on the air cleaner, and unclip the air intake plenum atop the engine with the one large spring clip underneath the backside. (Push down on the top of the plenum to ease un-clipping) There are two o-rings that seal the plenum to the throttle body, be sure to check to make sure they seat right when re-installing the plenum. I then remove the lower half of the air cleaner from the body. I believe there are three nuts holding it, 10mm, I think. This may or may not be necessary, but it gives you more working room and an opportunity to clean out the lower air cleaner housing. The next step is to make a sketch of the pulleys and how the belt goes around each one. Trust me on this one; don't leave it to memory. (how do I know this?) Then, using a 1/2" socket extension in the 1/2" square hole in the tensioner, apply force to hold the belt loose enough to remove. Installation is the reverse of removal; make sure the grooves in the belt align to the grooves in the pulleys. It's a little tricky due to lack or space between the engine and shock tower; use good lighting to check each grooved pulley for proper belt seating.
