The exhaust manifold will often glow cherry after a long motorway run - not a problem. This is particularly pronounced on a turbo. A blown gasket would not have caused your exhaust to glow - if the head was that hot, it would've ceased pretty quickly. As for your temperature gauge, unless the gauge was faulty (you'd be really foolish to drive around with a faulty gauge), the you'd have seen a high temperature rise, then a drop, as coolant ran out. -- Grunff
