Not wishing to put a damper on things, but the earlier poster's statement that the 2D 900 is the same as the convertible, and that the roof doesn't offer much reinforcement, is utter twaddle. If you want to get an idea of how much reinforcement is put into the convertible just look at the spec sheets and see how much heavier it is than the saloon - this is all reinforcement. (900i convertible kerb weight 2860-2970lb, 900i 2D 2830-2910lb, so an additional 30-60lbs of steel) Saab being Saab (with help from American Sunroof Corporation, whose original concept which prompted Saab to pick up the idea was based on a 3D 900) they didn't just add metal, but did a fairly major redesign job on some areas. The changes that I know about specifically include: 1. a completely new, reinforced windscreen surround (it is actually at a different angle, and therefore has a completely different screen - this may be to allow the bottom of the frame to meet the wheelarches, as they used to do on the old 99, although I haven't looked) 2. reinforced sills 3. reinforcement around the boot / rear seat area So I really would urge caution! As an engineer I'd be happy to offer some help / advice on how to go about reinfocing a 2D 900 - very cheaply! - with bits of girder to help you on your way! Good luck! Silas London, UK
