Both places have their advantages and disadvantages, but one isn't necessarly "better" in this case, just different. Porsche 911's have the key on the left side of the steering column. This was done to facitate LeMans starts back when they had to run across the track, get in the car and start it up at the start of the race. The theory was you could get the car started a fraction of a second sooner. This in a 24 hour race. > However, the reactions to any suggestion that this is nothing more than > an irrational Saab tradition are revealing. > Tradition, yes, irrational, no. Just because something isn't done the same way as on a Chevy, doen't make it wrong. A good example it the old Ford vs Chevy style of starter solenoid. Ford used to locate it remotely on the fender, and GM would put it on the starter itself. The Ford part was cheaper to replace, and wasn't exposed to nearly as much heat and as a result, it was generaly more reliable. Ford now puts them on the starter, it's cheaper.
