Had the same thing happen recently on a 90. It was a bit of a suprise. Turns out to have been that the key was stuck in the "start" position, and hadn't returned to "run" like it normally should. The only clue was that the fan and stereo weren't on as usual when driving away. Easy enough to replace the starter, once you put the fire out, push start the car, and drive it home. lycka till!
