Subject: 9k DIY gearbox/tranny repairs?

My '98 9k aero manual gearbox needs some repairs, the 2nd gear synchro is on it's way out. Other than that it seems ok, but more wear may become apparent once I get it apart. I've tackled most repairs over the years, but a gearbox rebuild is not one of them. Has anyone replaced synchros themselves, or have you always entrusted that to a specialist? How difficult a job is it and do you need any specialist tools? Is the Haynes gearbox manual worth buying? Any experience would be much appreciated. many thanks David
