Ross, I have an 87 9000S that did the same thing...Your best bet for the 9000 is the Haynes manual...Once you have checked your vacuum hoses, and don't forget the one to your charcoal canister (behind the passenger side front wheel well fender liner), clean your AIC valve and your MAF. Check your plugs and plug wires, distributor cap and rotor. Make sure you clean your throttle body. Do Not use Gumout carb and choke cleaner. Small print says not for fuel injected cars. Use Berryman's Spray Carb and Choke cleaner or BG brand Throttle Body Cleaner. If your AIC valve is shot, you will have to replace it.
