Just did this. Mine is a '95 and it had the same problem. Replace the
fan motor at the same time. If you inspect the brushes, they will be
shot and the armature will be pretty well worn. It is about the same
amount of work to extract the fan and you do not want to do this in a
few months when it finally craps out, do you? I got my parts from
thesaabsite.com. I got some 1/2-1" adhesive backed foam from Home Depot
to run around the new core to mimic what I saw when I removed the old
one. The leak was on the passenger aft side. I was able to do the
complete job in an evening and eat dinner with my wife. I did not drain
the cooling system as it already had good new Mercedes coolant in it. I
did clamp off/plug the hoses to keep coolant in the block and topped it
off when i was done. I was really scared of this job, but it was not
nearly as bad as its reputation. Apparently, the earlier cars (2.0L)
have more clearance problems and were quite the bear. The 2.3L is much
easier from what I read. The wiper linkage nor motor had to be removed
for mine. I was able to do it without removing the short section of
aquarium wall behind the ABS relay box, but highly recommend spending
the time to remove this. It makes plenty of room to maneuver the fan
shroud around. Good luck!

P.S. the deterioration is due to galvanic corrosion from poor coolant
maintenance. Replace the coolant with good G05 type (Mercedes Benz
dealer as a source). I have read that Zerex has started selling a G05
type coolant as well on the open market, but have not personally seen it.
