Looks just like a medical one, but has a long metal probe on the end, which you can touch different things with to hear them well. Using that, you should be able to poke around (this does do it when the car is standing still, so you can) and see what's making the noise. They're not all that expensive at your generic car parts store (something like 20 bucks). Cheap when you consider your sanity, or the fact that it might be something important doing something bad. I've used my _good_ steth for troubleshooting computers on occasions, but I'm not sticking *that* into an engine compartment ;) Dave Hinz
