Subject: Re: '87 Saab 9000 Turbo - Want to remove Anti Pollution Controll

In the US, all cars for the past 10 or 15 years have had oxygen sensors to measure the exhaust gasses so that the fuel mixture can be regulated to provide exactly the proper fuel/air ratio for combustion. This isn't something that was added on as an afterthought to reduce pollution, and it can't just be disconnected without causing problems. It was designed as part of a system to provide the best economy, performance and levels of emissions. Disconnection would cause the "Check Engine" light to illuminate, and would result in reduced fuel economy and power and also give higher levels of pollution. The days of using pollution control equipment that reduced power and economy ended in the 1980's when fuel injection started to become into widespread usage.
