Robert, Normally, I do not get the same grinding noise going from first to third; unless, I am shifting agressively/quickly. I can shift from first to second and from third to second with little to no noise if I am *very* careful and patient, although, sometimes my best attempts fail. Shifting between all other gears (including reverse) is noise free. Changes in outdoor temperature don't seem to help or hurt matters either. On the positive side, it hasn't gotten any worse. I believe the problem was likely was caused by heat as the temperature that day was at or above 32 degrees C (90 F.). Immediately prior to the stop-start driving, I was maintaining 115-130 kph (70-80 mph) mostly non-stop for 3.5 hours. I don't know if the following information is significant, but, my car was fully loaded with clothes, camping gear, bicycles and my girlfriend. (my girlfriend is nearby and vehemently denies any culpability) I know that I need to repair/replace the transmission. I will replace the clutch as well. Most importantly, I want to know what caused this, so I do not have to endure the expense again. ($3000!) Is this a manufacturing defect such that I will have to pull off of the road whenever there is a severe traffic backup? That would not be good.
