Subject: Alternator problems '92 900

Help, please! My car is a Canadian '92 900, turbo, with about 165 thou Km (100 thou miles) and has a/c also. Over the last two days, the battery warning light started coming on at startup, and goes out at speed when the engine revs over 3500 rpm; but the belt didn't squeal at all. In traffic the light didn't go out and the engine dies very quickly, 5 or 10 minutes; and the battery was completely dead. Now the light doesn't go out at all, just goes much dimmer at higher revs. The battery is about 6 months old and good quality. I've removed and remade the ground connection at the alternator (it wasn't loose), the other end seems solid at the engine. Any thoughts or tricks for this situation? Is it possibly the alternator brushes, as the Townsend site suggests can be the case, and is checking them (on the car) as easy as Townsend describes? Can the alternator easily be checked at home on the car, or is this a situation where I'm better off removing it, and taking it into my local auto parts store where they will test it for me? (I'm also several hours drive away from the closest Saab dealer!) Thanks in advance.....
