Listen for tranny noise. Listen for turbo whine - a little is fine, but if it's a grindy-whine, that's bad. Look for white/blue/black smoke out the tailpipe. Check to see that they've been reasonable about changing the oil. If it's young yet (under 100K miles), look to see how it was serviced during it's warranty period. > On older VW's, I look for solid rockers under "A" pillar, no or little > rot inside engine bay adjacent to cowl area, solid shifter bearings, > no "clack clack clack" in reverse gear indicating a broken idler, > yaddah, yaddah, yaddah. Structural rust isn't something I've dealt with since the 2-stroke/V4 Saab cars. Trunk floor I've heard of, if the drains get plugged. I'd say buy one with good bodywork as that's a sign that the car has been kept up well. It's an oversimplification, but if it looks like it's been through WWIII, it probably hasn't been cared for mecanically either. If you find a specific car and want to ask about it here, I'm sure someone here will know that particular model to give you feedback. Dave Hinz
