I was playing with most of the smaller hoses that looked as if they could've been vacuum hoses anywhere near the throttle or the inlet manifold, and there's certainly a similar-size hose that leads from the oil filler cap to _somewhere_. I may have fiddled with that in my search. I have had a look since last time I posted, and there's an air hose running from the manifold to the very top of the engine, almost dead centre, which is corroded on the inside of a kink where it bends down under the bonnet lid -- I reckon this might be my culprit, but I'm not going to waggle it about any more until I've got a replacement ;-) I'll let you know how I get on...
