Do you think that you used to be able to go around certain corners a little faster without slipping? When you brake for traffic lights, slow-drivers, old people, etc, do you find the car bounce a little? Does the car look a little lop-sided when viewed from the front, or back? The best trick I've learned is to place the car on the level and then on each corner in turn push down and hold. When releasing, look out for the car bouncing up and down. If it goes straight back up and stops dead, good. If not, bad :( Get underneath the car and wipe your finger down the shock. If they are oil filled shocks, leaking oil or a collection of sticky guff in the middle part of the shock where the two parts join are a good indication of failure. I'm not sure how to check (without specialist equipment) whether gas shocks are failing this way. A gararge would be able to pop them off and check them against the manufacturers' specifications if you really want - they'll probably tell you they need replacing anyway though to get a sale, along with a new set of tyres and brake disks, of course :) I'm not sure of the recommended service changes, but I would usually change around every 50,000 miles (being a cheapskate) - or when they break. I got some Boge gas filled shocks for my 1985 900i within the last year and it's a lovely ride. Firm, but comfortable - unlike my Aero which is rock-solid :) Hope this helps, Paul 1985 900i 16V 1989 900 Turbo S http://pjgh.go.dyndns.org/saab/index.html
