If they are, then the valve innards are easy to replace (that way you don't have to get the tyre dismounted, as you would if the whole stem were to be replaced). What was happening to me a few years back was leakage between the tyre bead and the rim, due to rust. Get a tyre firm to push the tyre bead off the rim, for the wheels in question. Lightly file/sand the rim contact surfaces. Then they usually add a bit of goo to make the contact airtight. Unlikely you'd blow out the tyre if the pressure had fallen so low. More likely you'd shred the casing first, but that's a waste of what's probably a good tyre as well as a scary and maybe dangerous incident. Tyre fitters fix this kind of stuff all the time, especially in places where there's lots of salt used on the roads. Robert Gothenburg
