I was told by someone that works for Avon tyres that they store them upright and that they have people that whose job it is to spend all day rotating them on the racks. He went on to explain something along the lines of: the rubber compounds behave a bit like super- cooled fluids so that if the tyres are just left, not only will they go out of shape, but something or other has a tendency to migrate due to gravity. So presumably if you stack them on their sides then whatever this mysterious stuff is that migrates will tend to go to one side of the tyre. So his advice would presumably be 'store them upright and rotate them from time to time'.
