The only reason there aren't any Viggens on the list of high-mileage saabs is, in my opinion, that there hasn't been enough years go by yet. I think your generalization may be overgeneralized, generally speaking. In any case, the question was about 4 vs 8, and a perceived lacking in 4-cyl engines by someone who's not all that familiar with the realities. Not a whole lot of point in getting into the finer points of engine internals if the real question is at the sophistication of a piston count.
