Subject: +/- on 9-5 steering wheel?

I just took my '02 Aero in for its 10000mi service, and the dealer gave me a 9-5 loaner. It looked almost identical to my Aero inside (other than the automatic transmission), but I noticed one puzzling little difference. On the steering wheel, right near the audio controls, were two little button thingies. One on each side, with a + on the right and a - on the left. The + and - were inside little gear-shaped icons. Apparently you pulled on these to make them do whatever they do, but I couldn't figure out what they were for and my curiosity is killing me. My first guess was some sort of semi-manual shift-up/down feature, but it didn't seem to do anything. My Aero's manual doesn't show anything like it. Maybe this was an '03 and they added some new doodad? Gary
