Yes, you can "get by" > with all-seasons, but then you are only getting adequate performance. > > As for the hassle of changing the tires twice a year - I have one > question. You do rotate your tires, don't you? Tire rotation is a silly idea which does nothing except insure that all of your tires wear out at the same time. Snow tires are useful if you live in a climate that gets snow. Much of the US gets snow only very occasionally. Driving around for 5 or 6 months with snow tires just to cover the off chance of a dusting of snow a few times a year seems kind of silly (to me at least). I live in New Hampshire and we only get serious snow a few times a year. On days that it does snow I drive a car (actually an AWD Ford Explorer SUV) with all-terrain tires. The tires on the Ford have never been rotated and are going on 65k miles. They probably have another 5k left. My rear wheel drive BMW and SAAB 9000 don't have snows, just all-season tires for the entire year. OTOH, if I lived in Rochester, NY (the snowiest city in the US) or the Michigan peninsula I'm sure I would want to get snow tires since it snows in those places every day.
