I hear that. A lot of folks have significantly oversize houses. FWIW, an acquaintance of mine spends a lot of time going into new, large homes. He finds many of them "furniture barren" because these folks can't afford the furniture to decorate after they pay the mortgage on a 4000 sq foot home. But, like the SUV, it's big and oh so impressive. I like the strategy of Thomas Jefferson. He refused to put a central stair in Montecello because he claimed that they were a waste of space. Instead, he had two very small staircases to the 2nd floor. Furniture was brought up to the floor by an external hoist. I try to keep that in mind when designing spaces myself. You can learn a lot by taking a tour of some houses from the 1700 and 1800's and seeing how they lived and utilized each and every available space. >OK, sorry for my off-topic rant. Mee too. That's it for now :-)
