Subject: Saab ("sob") story - might just be losing the old gal
AHCTTFME
dang. some li'l ol' lady in a white camry rams into my beloved '87 =
9000T in the rain. grrrr. (okay, maybe not quite yet my beloved - but =
i am still infatuated and still courting, after all, we just met last =
april.) but she got her left side all torn up by the camry, and she =
won't heal too easily. (oh if i could only cradle the 3000lb baby in my =
arms). insurance estimator took one look and (without evaluating it) =
said it'd be a write-off. i didn't want to hear that, i told him. so i =
asked for the options. i could take their write-off offer (i'll find =
out monday - probably in the C$3500 range, after some haggling) and =
leave my love with them, he said, or i could take 80% of the offer and =
keep her.
so i went to a body shop to get an immediate assessment of the repair - =
C$5800 - yikes.
see, i've already put some good money into it to get it to where i like =
it and wondered what everyone thought i should do. i was originally =
planning to keep the car for about 3 years.
i could:
1) haggle and haggle to try to get the complete repair done by the =
insurance guys (i wasn't at fault, so there is some hope here, though =
not a hell of a lot)
2) take the 3500 and try to find a replacement car. not too likely, =
given the vintage - they're getting rare now. (the estimator has agreed =
to give me a few months to look for one, though i'd have to drive around =
in the wreck for that time - the rear door, driver's side doesn't close =
completely, so its open to the rain, and noise...)
3) take the 80% and the car, and put it towards a complete repair. (i'd =
have to fork out the 3000 or so difference)
4) take the 80%, keep the car and try to do a "partial repair" (you =
know, live with some cosmetic damage, just get the door fixed to close =
completely, but live with a dented front fender for a while.
5) take the 80%, keep the car and hunt for a replacement, then use the =
old gal for parts, or try to sell it in pieces.... (i don't really want =
to become a parts guy, tho')
6) make a medical claim to get more cash....(ha ha - saab drivers don't =
get hurt in accidents, right??!! he says as he rubs his aching neck...)
i don't have a lot of spare cash, so i'd be looking for a replacement in =
the 5000 range, tops.
thoughts?
