Subject: disable/remove airbag?

Hi, I have the Bently manual for my 1992 Saab 900. Although there are several reasons why one might need to remove the steering wheel to fix something or other, the Bently manual suggests that only authorized Saab people should dare disable the airbag to the point where the wheel and steering column are safe to work on. I appreciate that the airbag is a potentially dangerous explosive device, but I can't help but wonder: is it possible to safely remove or disable it without special tools? Do any (easily available) manuals have information on doing this? Surely it's possible for the do-it-yourselfer to safely do with the right knowledge. Thanks, John
