As for reliability, try comparing a Classic 900, not a 2002 GM Saab > to a BMW. Yes, the 900C was a lot more spacious. I would say that the 3 series is very comparable spacewise to a NG900 or 9-3. The 9000 / 9-5 would have to be cpmapared to a 5 series both space and price wise. > > I have some friends who drive BMWs and they are perfectly happy with the > handling and reliability, but they regularly replace broken suspension > components, rebuild transmissions, and are thrilled to get 10,000 miles per > tire at $400 a tire - and they mount and balance the tire themselves. The mileage you get out of tires is primarily a function of the tire. Sure, you have to keep it aligned too, but if they are only getting 10k miles they are 1) buying soft compound performance tires and b) probably driving in a "spirited" manner. I'm pretty confident that if you mounted up some rock hard "Good****" tires and ran them mostly on the freeway you could get 60k miles on any car. It is true that for some reason a lot of the people that buy BMW's like to fiddle around with replacing with high performance parts, even more so than the SAAB owners do.
