If you're going for silicone, 3-4mm is fine (for rubber, 3mm is too tight). You need quite a thick wall (3mm+) in order to stop it collapsing. Have you done the usual new car stuff - plugs/cap/rotor arm/leads/air filter/fuel filter etc?
