How old is this car? If it is a 1996 or newer model, it could be something as simple as the gas cap not being put on tightly (the gas cap issue doesn't apply to older cars because of changes in emissions requirements). For older cars, it could be the oxygen sensor, or a fuel injector (to name just two of many items), but you would need a test tool to find out what code is associated with the Check Engine light. I just bought the tool for my 1991 9000T on closeout for about $15. When the Check Engine light comes on, it doesn't usually mean that you are going to break down, but you probably are putting out more nasty emissions, or getting reduced fuel economy.
