Subject: Re: R-134a in 86 SAAB 900 T?

This is tempting. What equipment do I need? I have rebuilt SAAB V4 engines, spliced together transmissions, taken apart several V4's R&R'd the front driveshaft on my 900T but never worked on A/C. They sell a kit for $40 but I'm not sure I need guages or what. Most mechanics just shake their heads when stuff like this is mentioned. What is the down side? Is there one? I, and probably no one else, ever plan to put R-12 back in this thing if the ES-12a fails. There is a wee bit of cooling. The compressor does put a drag on the engine and the hose going into the heat exchanger where it cools the air going into the car is a wee bit cold. So it's just out of juice. Is there somewhere I can take my car and say "Take whatever R-12 is left and keep it" without being charged? Then it looks like I'm all set. Worst case is I sell the car and buy another which is what I will have to do anyway if this doesn't work. Mile Hi says the average R-12 repair last year was $450. I don't mind paying that but what if in 2 months something else breaks? It does have 225k miles. I'd like to keep it another year or so, anyway, unless something really disastrous happens. And the Jeep has not had AC for a year or so, so if it works in the SAAB... Charles.
