Saab is trying to come out of the niche they live in and move to the mainstream. THe mainstream folks don't know about Saab much at all, so the hatch is a surprise, not an expected feature. Hatch backs (at least in the USA) seem to be associated with "cheap Japanese cars from the 70's" for a lot of people. While I don't agree, that's still the perception with a lot of folks. Keep in mind that the perception of a lot of folks is also still "bigger is better", "you need a v8 or maybe a V6 for economy but you'd never buy a 4cyl cause they're underpowered", and "Americans cars are still better".
