Subject: Buying a used 9-5

I am looking to replace my 2.4 SE S80 in a few months with a used 9-5. The 9-5 makes sense to me here in the UK as depreciation is quite sharp - I can hopefully pick up a 3-4 year old model for much less than an equivalent BMW 5-series or Merc E-Class. It must have an auto box, and preferably leather. But which should I buy? I will have a budget of around £10k, which seems to eliminate an approved used one. Should I look to auction, or a independent dealer? I have read a couple of scare stories about LPT failure at 70K miles - is this realistic? A 3.0 V6 or Griffin would be a lovely spec, but would it be too pricey to run? Anybody got any comments?
