Subject: electric arial probs.

OK, my old electric arial had been stuck halfway between fully extended, and fully down. Car is a C900 T16S 1984. It wasn't a problem as it still worked as an arial, but made a god awful grinding noise when you switched on and off the headunit. When I swapped for the CD player, it continued to do that, although I had to tape the antenna remote line to the original Saab one, as I didn't have any bullet connectors. Still made the grinding sound for a while then stopped. I assumed one of two things. 1) the taped antenna connection had come undone inside the dash. 2) the motor had finally burn't out after being abused for don't know how long. This weekend, i took the bull by the horns, and bought a new Universal power antenna (not cheap at £45), and a pack of bullet connectors. Had to cut the mast on the old one to remove it as it couldn't be wiggled through the wing as it was. Then had to try and modify the mounting plate to take the slightly different fitting of the new one. So far so good, except even when modified it still would fit. Had to make a very flimsy bracket just to get it mounted inside. Made all the conections. Checked that the antenna feed wire was properly connected (it was). Cannected red to red on the antenna, and green to green on the antenna, and connected the antennas earth lead to the mounting stud for the rear light cluster. Switched on the head unit, no antenna up. Checked the circuit between the green wire direct to the earth point. Good circuit when HU switched on, not curcuit when HU switched off. Checked the red line, no circuit when HU off, good circuit when on. So both lines get power (the stereo is wired to be permanent live, not on ignition feed) when the HU is on, but both cold when off. Anything stupid that I'm missing. I like the Saab power arial feature, and don't fancy having to fit a fixed "Rubber duck", or manual retracting on, as it isn't original to the car? Is there a fuse somewhere that may have blown, that I'm not thinking about? TIA. -- The poster formerly known as Skodapilot. http://www.bouncing-czechs.com
