I have found a great amount of variability with Manual transmissions - for instance, if driven carefully the manual car we have can get anywhere from 24-26mpg around town to 18mpg (it is a Saturn that we are looking to replace with a 9-5 wagon or a Volvo wagon), but the automatic seems to turn in a much more consistant mileage.
