I have witnessed many accidents and I've seen first hand an airbag deploy and cover more than half of the person's windshield (while he was still driving down the road because he got clipped by someone taking a corner too sharply) and it may have deflated soon, but it blocked his view totally and he smashed into a retaining wall. It was a GM car, can't remember which make or model. I have also seen the airbags go off with a bump into the bumper that did not involve an accident. This was not in a Saab though. I still think side airbags are the way to go, for me.
