First a petrol 1.8T SE which was quick then a 1.9 TDI PD115 Sport. Both of these cars were automatic, and were generally pretty good. The main problem with VW's was the dealer. On one of the cars one of the small speakers failed in a rear door, which I wanted replaced under Warranty. The speaker was all part of the interior door handle assy. When I got the car back the handle was jammed in the open position and the door wouldn't open. This was after it took them over 6 months to order the parts because they kept 'forgetting'......hmmmm. At least I never had a coil-pack fail. One of my colleagues had his car sitting at a dealer for 7 weeks waiting for one of these. Overall I really like the car especially the last one because it was fully loaded. In the UK we do not have the Ford Contour model, but I have done 350,000 miles in Mondeos over the last 10 years, and they have all been superbly reliable. The last one was returned at 30 months old with 120,000 on the clock, and nothing at all went wrong with it. Because there is a Ford dealer on every street corner you can always find a good one for the routine servicing. Cheers Nick
