Subject: rev counter 9k and oil pump stuff

Main point of post further on...10 months ago my 1990 2.3na 9000CDS was sick. I'd started it up one evening for a shopping run and the oil light never went out. I stupidly thought that it was the oil level light and thought I'd buy some oil at the supermarket (an unusual event since it's never used oil between regular changes). On the way to the supermarket it appeared apparent that it was pressure not level indicated, since the tappets were getting noisy. I drove a total of 5 miles or so at low revs to get back home. A few days later and we took the oil pump rotors out. They were out of tolerance (car has done 130k) and nothing else seemed out of the ordinary - the drive dog was intact, we could blow into/through the oil strainer and I didn't want to take the sump out. Anyway, I got an old Landrover as a replacement tow vehicle and the Saab sat there for several months. I couldn't afford to replace the oil pump and anything else that might have been damaged for a while. My neighbour came round the other day and said that he'd been working near a Europarts place and had got the oil pump. I phoned a main dealer in Bosham since I was worried about the pressure relief valve having light scores on it, but they told me they had never ordered this part for a 2.3 9000 and put me through to a mechanic for confirmation as to whether this would be a likely fault. He confirmed that in 18 years he'd never replaced this part, wanted me to confirm that the crankshaft drive was intact and said that apart from a balance chain stripping the teeth and dropping them into the sump he'd never seen another reason for the oil pump to fail, so we replaced the pump, packed it with vaseline and put the car back together again. The mechanic also said that it was rare for this engine to seize due to low oil pressure and that it would be fine if it started again. Did an oil change and then connected up the battery and removed the DI wiring and turned it over. After 10 seconds or so the oil pressure light went out so we reconnected the DI and it started first time. Noisy. But it soon quietened down, amazingly, and after a short drive sounded quieter than before the incident. Washed the car and took it in for an MOT where to my surprise it sailed through with no advises either :) However, last night the rev counter stopped working, any ideas? I've now got to work out the cheapest way to insure a Saab, Honda Blackbird and a Landrover 110CSW, since this comes to about £1000, but I want to continue using the landrover for towing my espresso business and keep the Saab for real driving and the bike for real riding :) -- Regards, Danny http://www.gaggia-espresso.com (a purely hobby site) http://www.dannyscoffee.com (UK advert for my mobile espresso service) swap Z for above characters in email address to reply
