You will also find that it will hold gears longer before upshifting taking advantage of the full power band making acceleration more brisk. Around town, we generally use the "Normal" mode, but have driven around town in sport mode as well. >> Are there any other benifits to sport mode? > > If the transmission locks out the tallest ratio under a certain speed, you > can get improved engine braking. When you want to pass on the freeway, doing it in sport mode will generally make an inappropriate upshift unlikely. >> I've found that when I'm in sport mode, and I I'm not careful, I'll put my >> foot down too far(well, not all that far either), and the car will jump > into >> a lower gear, this startles me :-o, so I let my foot off the gas and it > goes >> back into the higher gear... all this jumping around of gears can't be > good >> either. > > Hmm . . . well that's your technique! > > Some people can use "Sport mode" to *save* fuel when overtaking, although it > does depend on the transmission. If you aren't used to a great deal of power with an automatic, the sport mode can be startling, I will agree [it makes the car feel as if the effective horsepower had doubled]. To get used to it, if you were to drive around town in sport mode all the time for a couple of days, you will understand how to use it better. This same technique can get you used to the manumatic shifting, if your car is so equipped (though the slowness of the shifting is irritating to me). >> What are your views? > > What does the manual say, out of interest, and does it also have a Winter > mode?
