Thanks (and to GW) for the replies. The boot has been torn for a few weeks, so I knew it was bound to go any day. I actually started getting a little tugging in the steering wheel on muddy dirt roads in VT, where I drive pretty often. Figured it was dirt getting in. > You might want to just replace the entire half shaft with a rebuilt assembly > considering the age of the car. www.rockauto.com has the left half shaft > assembly for $65 plus shipping, and you will have to pay return freight on > the core. You could also price the assembly at your local auto parts > stores. My local independent Saab mechanic here in RI does cheap, solid work. He usually has common used parts around, like the CV joint and half shaft. I'd do it myself if I had the space, but I live in the city and don't have a garage. Also as I said, I was worried about yet another front-end problem. The steering rack is also on the way out. My decision now is do I sink ~$600 in repairs into the front end or just buy another classic 900 in better shape for a few more bucks. Anyone reading this in New England and have one for sale? :) -jw -- 1984 900S hatchback Rhode Island, USA
